Smooth 1-2 centimetre swellings just below the skin surface usually on the upper trunk and commonly on the scalp.

The full name is epidermoid cysts or sometimes pilar cysts. These are often isolated - that is occurring in ones or twos. Sometimes they are genetic (running through families) and can occur in larger numbers. The scalp is probably the commonest site but the upper back and other body sites are not unusual. These cysts are usually very easily removed by surgery if they are leading to problems but can be left alone because they are non serious unless they become infected.
