Thread Veins

Consult with Dr John Ashworth Now

Microsclerotherapy is a highly effective treatment used to remove thread veins, fine blood vessels that appear close to the skin.

The veins can be red, blue or purple in colour and can be found over the calves, ankles and thighs. Often they present as defined spidery threads, or collectively they can appear as congested areas even bruising.

A fine needle is used to inject sclerosant into the vein, this is a solution designed to irritate the internal lining of the vein, resulting in shrinkage and destruction over several weeks.

The treatment is 15 or 30 minute, depending on the size of the area to be treated. Clients report that the treatment feels uncomfortable rather than painful. After treatment, the area is covered with a compression bandage. We recommend that you rest with legs elevated for the rest of the day, the treated area will look red and inflamed after treatment.

It is unlikely that one session will be enough, it is likely that you will need a series of treatment (typically, two or three sessions).

A consultation is needed prior to treatment for Dr Ashworth to assess whether the treatment is suitable. Thread vein treatment will not be successful if varicose veins are present.
